Handy Moving Checklist and Tips

 
Here we have compiled a handy moving checklist for moving into your new home. This checklist will help you remember important moving dates, deadlines and other useful tips before you go.
 
 
6 Weeks Before Moving
  1. If you are planning a garage sale, set a date.
  2. If you have children, arrange a transfer of school records.
  3. Discover schools in your new community. A helpful resource is available at www.theschoolreport.com.
  4. Notify your insurance companies of the move.
  5. Start a "Move File" for all receipts, papers and estimates related to your move.
4 Weeks Before Moving
  1. Choose a van line/rental truck company you will use and give them tentative pick-up and delivery dates.
  2. If you are moving to a new city, be sure to ask your attorney, doctor and other providers for refferrals and any necessary records.
  3. If you have pets, schedule a check-up and be sure to get a copy of their records from the veterinarian.
  4. Notify your insurance companies of the move.
  5. Set schedules with real estate agents and/or landlords.
2 Weeks Before Moving
  1. Schedule disconnect dates with your local utility and cable company.
  2. Notify new utility and cable companies of connect dates in your new home.
  3. If you have a lawnmower or any power equipment, drain them of oil and gasoline.
  4. Moving companies will not move them if they are full.
  5. Cancel newspaper delivery and trash pickup effective on your move date.
  6. Clean the carpet, floors, and drawers before moving into your new home.
1 Week Before Moving
  1. Clean out refrigerator and defrost freezer.
  2. Have your car serviced if you will be driving a long distance.
  3. Confirm connect dates for utilities in your new home.
  4. Be sure to have the Post Office forward all your mail to your new address.
  5. Transfer or close your checking account.
  6. Be sure to get all items from your safe or deposit box.
  7. Pack a survival kit with basic tools, bathroom essentials, eyeglasses, address book, checkbook, clock, change of clothes, and directions to your new home.
Packing For The Move
  1. Bend from your kness and not from your back while lifting boxes or other heavy items.
  2. For large appliances, remove loose fittings and accessories and pack separately.
  3. Tie down, tape or wedge all movable parts and doors.
  4. WRAP...anything you do not want scratched or broken with blankets, curtains, sheets, plastic, or paper.
  5. LABEL...anything you wrap or place into a box.
  6. Plants help make a home feel homey so do not forget them. Store them in plastic bags with holes pnched for air. Check agricultural regulations on moving plants or fruit trees in your area.
  7. Moving can be overwhelming for your pets. Remeber to help make the move calm and comfortable for your pets too!
Moving Day
  1. Spend the entire day at home with the movers.
  2. Carry any valuables of family heirlooms with you.
  3. Specify a "DO NOT MOVE" area where you can place items you do not the movers to take with them.
  4. Right before the movers leave, take a final tour of your home, making sure nothing has been left in drawers or closes and that all doors and windows are locked.
Arriving at Your New Home
  1. When you first arrive, check boxes for external damage. If damage is found, check the contents.
  2. Plug in large appliances before your large furniture blocks the outlet.
  3. Locate your survival kit and put it where you can find it and will not forget it.
  4. Obtain phone numbers needed in case of an emergentcy suchs as the fire department and local police.
  5. Check with the post office on any mail that is being held for you.
  6. Register your automobiles.
  7. Register to vote in your new area.
Although moving to a new home can sometimes be stressful, it is usually a very exciting time for you and your family as well. Be sure to ask your real estate professional any specific questions or concerns you might have during the process.
